The Falcon Heavy rocket launched a classified spacecraft for U.S. military space intelligence into orbit. For SpaceX, this launch completed a series of three missions in less than half a day. What exactly was delivered and where has not been disclosed. However, the choice of the most powerful Falcon rocket may indicate either a heavy payload or a distant orbit.

Three Launches in Half a Day
The rocket lifted off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on October 2 at 6:54 a.m. Kyiv time. The NROL-97 mission was carried out for the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office. It was SpaceX’s third launch in less than 13 hours.
The first was a Falcon 9 that launched on October 1 carrying the astronauts of the Crew-13 mission to the International Space Station. Later, another Falcon 9 placed 130 satellites from the Transporter-18 rideshare mission into orbit.
The company had previously demonstrated such a pace only once. In March 2025, SpaceX launched the same number of Falcon 9 rockets within 12 and a half hours. And on September 28, Starship made its 14th flight, the first commercial one in the rocket’s history. Thus, all of the rockets currently flown by SpaceX launched within a period of three days.
First Intelligence Mission
The agency that operates U.S. reconnaissance satellites ordered a Falcon Heavy launch for the first time. The details of NROL-97 are classified, as is the case with most of its missions. SpaceX did not even disclose the target orbit.
For years, the heaviest U.S. reconnaissance spacecraft were launched by United Launch Alliance’s Delta IV Heavy rocket. Its final flight in April 2024 was also carried out for the intelligence agency, after which the Delta IV Heavy was retired. Since then, other rockets have been needed for the heaviest reconnaissance payloads, and NROL-97 became the first such mission for Falcon Heavy. Space.com editor Mike Wall suggests that the NROL-97 payload is either very heavy or headed for a distant orbit.
An Emblem with a Lighthouse
The mission emblem features the Latin inscription Orbem mundi mutandum conservare. It can be translated as “to preserve a changing world” or “to preserve the world by changing it.”

The agency explained the lighthouse at the center of the emblem as a symbol of resilience and the ability to transmit information to those who need it. The edges of the light beam align with the 9 and 11 marks on a clock face. This commemorates the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Four bright stars represent the four aircraft lost that day, while the Moon is shown in the phase it had on September 11, 2026.
Design and Landing
The Falcon Heavy rocket consists of three modified Falcon 9 first stages. It debuted in February 2018. Since then, all 14 of its flights have been successful.
At the request of the intelligence agency, the launch broadcast ended shortly after the landing of the two side boosters. They touched down at Cape Canaveral a little less than eight minutes after liftoff.
For one booster, this was its second flight, while for the other it was the fourth. The rocket’s center core was not recovered.
