Space shield for $175 billion: Elon Musk tries to capitalize on panic in the US

Elon Musk’s company SpaceX is seeking a very expensive government contract to build the ambitious Golden Dome space-based missile defense system. The project, presented by the Trump administration, is supposed to protect the U.S. from foreign missile threats from anywhere on the planet. However, its scope, timing and funding are already controversial.

From 3 to 20 years

“Golden Dome” aims to create a network of thousands of satellites capable of detecting, tracking and destroying enemy missiles with lasers or kinetic weapons. The Trump administration says the system will be ready as soon as 3 years from now. But it would take $175 billion to build such a space defense. However, the U.S. Congress considers the numbers understated, and estimates the project at $831 billion with a timeframe of up to 20 years. Such disagreements cast doubt on the realization of the project at all.

Leading aerospace giants Lockheed Martin, Boeing and SpaceX are already interested in the defense project. According to Reuters, Musk’s company, along with Palantir and Anduril, has proposed launching more than 1,000 reconnaissance and 200 strike satellites. Using Starlink technology and reusable Falcon rockets may cut costs, but even for SpaceX, it’s a colossal challenge.

Money, influence and conflict

The project is actively funded through a Republican bill that provides $25 billion for the first phase. However, 42 congressional Democrats are calling for an investigation because of possible conflicts of interest. They point to Musk’s close ties to Trump: millions of dollars in campaign donations, a position as an advisor to the government, and partnerships with longtime Trump supporters — the founders of Palantir and Anduril.

Particularly troubling is SpaceX’s proposal to implement the system on a “subscription” model, which would allow the company to avoid the Pentagon’s normal procurement procedures.

Technological and international challenges

In favor of SpaceX, its experience points out: more than 11,000 Starlink satellites in orbit, successful launches and the ability to upgrade existing platforms. However, the creation of a global space shield is unprecedented in history. China has already condemned the project, warning of the risk of a “space arms race” and destabilizing international security.

If the Pentagon chooses other performers, such as United Launch Alliance or Blue Origin, they will have to prove their competitiveness. But even if successful, Golden Dome could open a Pandora’s box, from technical glitches to ethical dilemmas regarding the militarization of space. Whether it becomes a shield for the US or turns out to be a gold mine for the elites, time will tell.
