NASA has decided to mark the upcoming launch of SpaceX Crew-4 to the International Space Station with a new, creative poster in a pronounced retro style. Astronaut Bob Hines, who will command the flight, said on Twitter that the posters of the US national parks of the 1930s and 1940s inspired the creation of the poster. The advertising posters were made in collaboration with the Federal Art Project. Astronaut Kjell Lindgren thanked Johnson Space Center graphic artist Cindy Bush for bringing the concept to life.
If you find it hard to believe that a serious space agency can make such entertaining marketing materials, perhaps you just didn’t pay attention before. Previous NASA posters parodied “Star Wars” with the entire team dressed as Jedi Knights, the cover of the Beatles’ Abbey Road album, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Harry Potter and even The Matrix.
For the Crew-4 mission, NASA astronauts Kjell Lindgren, Bob Hines, Jessica Watkins and ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti began their preflight quarantine on April 8. The launch will take place no earlier than April 21. This group of astronauts is the fourth rotation of the crew of the International Space Station under NASA’s commercial crew program. In order to get there, the crew will fly on a new SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft called Freedom on a Falcon 9 rocket. It will be launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida.
NASA delayed Crew-4 to distribute missions on the space station. According to the Aerospace Administration, the Axiom mission — the first fully private expedition to the space station — arrived on Saturday, April 9. This was a little later than originally planned to give the teams time to complete the final processing of the spacecraft before the flight.
