In early June, the U.S. Senate should elect a new head of NASA. Now businessman and astronaut Jared Isaacman is proposed for this position. He is expected to meet many challenges facing the organization right from the start.

Jared Isaacman
The U.S. Senate is preparing to vote for a new head of NASA. The U.S. Space Administration has been without a permanent head since winter. On April 30, the Commerce Committee formally nominated billionaire and astronaut Jared Isaacman for the position, but all formalities for him were only recently completed.
Isaacman is someone who has never worked for NASA, but has had close ties to the organization for a couple of decades and has a great understanding of the subject. In addition, he is considered to be a person close to Elon Musk.
Isaacan has already met with several influential senators and no one doubts that his nomination will be approved. However, he will lead NASA in extremely challenging times, which are primarily due to funding cuts caused by Donald Trump, whom the businessman generally supports.
Challenges for NASA
Crucial to the whole story is the 2026 budget proposal, which offers unprecedented cuts. NASA’s expenses are to be cut by 25%. Massive staff layoffs are underway. Work on the Orion spacecraft is stopped and the Artemis program itself is not going to continue after the third mission.
In other areas, the cuts are no less sweeping. And with an explanation to the staff of how to live with all this, Isaacman should start his work. However, industry representatives are still optimistic about his appointment. He is expected to be able to effectively defend the agency’s interests, and things can still change for the better.
In addition to Isaacman, the U.S. Senate has to confirm three other NASA officials. This is primarily the case with Deputy Isaacman. Matthew Anderson, a retired Air Force colonel, has been proposed for the position. Second in line is the organization’s chief financial officer. Greg Autry is expected to be the one.
The position of inspector general of NASA raises the most questions. It has been vacant since 2023. The White House has not nominated any candidates for it yet.
