Ukraine has terminated the agreement on cooperation with Russia in space

On February 4, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine terminated the agreement on cooperation with Russia in the space sphere by its decision. This was announced in its regular report on the work, published in Telegram, by the representative of the government in the Verkhovna Rada Taras Melnychuk.

“Termination of the Agreement between the Government of Ukraine and the Government of the Russian Federation on Cooperation in the Field of Exploration and Use of Outer Space for Peaceful Purposes, made on 27.08.1996, and the Protocol between the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the Government of the Russian Federation on Amendments to the Agreement between the Government of Ukraine and the Government of the Russian Federation on Cooperation in the Field of Exploration and Use of Outer Space for Peaceful Purposes, made 26.11.2010.” – he wrote.

In addition, on this day, parliamentarians considered and adopted a number of bills concerning the state postal service, budget formation, operation of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, the maintenance of the National Memorial Military Leadership and others.

Why did such an agreement exist?

The agreement on Peaceful Cooperation in the space industry between Ukraine and Russia was signed back in 1996. At that time, relations between the two countries were not characterized by the term “war” and rockets for space were produced together.

For example, the Dnepr carrier was initially RS-20 ballistic rockets, which were imported to Ukraine from the Russian north, they were processed at the plant and sent to Kazakhstan, from where they put satellites into orbit.

But even before the start of Russia’s invasion of Donbas in 2014, many joint projects of the two countries were closed. This was followed by the annexation of Crimea and the export of everything related to space from Ukraine to Russia was stopped. But the agreement remained formally valid until recently.
