Donald Trump has once again drawn public attention to the U.S. Space Force by publishing on social media a mock-up of a new generation of uniforms for its personnel. The accompanying description states that the clothing design was inspired by the cult 1997 science-fiction film “Starship Troopers.”
The design features a severe, deliberately militarized cut in “space gray” and “northern black” tones. The branch emblem appears practically everywhere: on the collar, sleeves, cap visor, and belt buckle.
The Irony of Cinema and a Severe Aesthetic
The concept contains a strange cultural paradox. Starship Troopers director Paul Verhoeven, who grew up in the Nazi-occupied Netherlands, deliberately created the film as a satire of totalitarianism and fascist propaganda. The military uniforms of the film’s “United Citizen Federation” contained clear references to Nazi uniforms, including the costumes worn by Neil Patrick Harris’s character, which were styled after SS uniforms.
Despite the film’s anti-fascist subtext, the new uniform concept for U.S. Space Force “Guardians” borrows precisely this severe military style, although without the long leather coats.
The Search for a U.S. Space Force Identity
The U.S. Space Force, established by Trump in 2019 to protect American interests in orbit, has repeatedly faced controversy over its branding. Service members in this branch manage rocket launches, track orbital objects, and support GPS, communications, and weather satellites.
However, throughout its existence, the service has faced criticism over an unclear public image. In 2022, the branch presented a grandiose anthem about an “invisible front line.” In 2023, it shortened its mission statement to the ambiguous slogan: “Secure our Nation’s interests in, from, and to space.” Later, it introduced a distinctive naming system for areas of activity involving references to “ghosts” and “sharks.”
It is currently unknown whether the design proposed by Trump will become the official uniform of Space Force personnel or whether it is simply another presidential initiative. Nevertheless, borrowing the aesthetic of a satirical film has once again fueled skepticism about the image of the youngest branch of the U.S. military.
