Hyundai signed an agreement with scientific institutions

The Korean automaker Hyundai Motor and the related company Kia Motors have signed an agreement to create a consortium with six leading scientific institutions of their country. Its goal is to create the concept of “mobile exploration of the Moon”. The news of this came almost simultaneously with the old man of the first Lunar mission of this state.

In addition to the representatives of the companies, the agreement is signed by:

  • Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI)
  • Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI)
  • Korea Automotive Technology Institute (KATECH)
  • Korea Астрономия и Space Science Institute (KASI)
  • Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT)
  • Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI)

The concept provides for the development of a spacecraft for traveling on the Moon and means of its delivery there. Perhaps it will look like a lunar car being developed by Toyota or its counterpart from Northrop Grumman. Hyundai Motor representatives believe that they can be useful not only as specialists in the automotive industry, but also due to their experience in robotics.

Robots on the Moon

Robots in the context of the Moon are not mentioned by chance. The proposed concept assumes their use together with transport for astronauts. The fact is that back in June 2021, it was Hyundai Motor that acquired a controlling stake in Boston Dynamics, an American engineering and robotics company.

At one time, they became famous for the manufacture of four-legged robots. It was their “mechanical dog” NeBula-SPOT that NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory recognized as capable of conducting autonomous studies of the surface of Mars.

Back in 2020, the American Space Agency offered Boston Dynamics to send their robots to Mars to explore caves. But then the Korean auto giant bought the company and for some time there was no information about this project. And now they have a chance to get to the Moon.
