Diamonds in the sky: Published a 368-megapixel portrait of the solar eclipse

Astrophotographer Andrew McCarthy has published an epic 368-megapixel celestial portrait. It captures the total solar eclipse observed in North America on April 8.

McCarthy’s goal was to convey the “visual magic” of the moment when the Moon completely hid the Sun. After that, the stars became visible in the sky, and a corona resembling a diamond ring shone around the Sun.

According to McCarthy, he had been preparing for the shooting for several years. Many of the stars were actually taken by him a few months before the eclipse — because the solar corona is too bright for them to be visible in the photo. The pattern of the stars fully corresponds to what could be seen in the sky at that moment.

The shooting was carried out with the help of five cameras. Within 4 minutes, while the Sun was hidden by the Moon, McCarthy took several thousand pictures. They were combined into a single composite image.

Earlier, we published another beautiful astroportrait created by Andrew McCarthy. You can see the growing moon on it.
