Ring of the Gods: Epic portrait of solar eclipse is published

Photographers Andrew McCarthy and Daniel Stein have published a magnificent portrait of an annular solar eclipse. It was observed in October last year in North and South America.

According to the photographers, they wanted the image to be so detailed that it could be printed to the size of the building, and it would still look great. This required them to painstakingly plan and carefully select a location.

The shooting was conducted in the Utah Desert using a variety of cameras. Stein was responsible for the foreground landscape, while McCarthy captured the Sun using a telescope equipped with an H-alpha filter. Thanks to this, he managed to capture many details on the surface of the sun, including prominences and spicula in the solar chromosphere.

In total, several thousand pictures were taken. They were then combined into a single image with a resolution of 1.69 pixels. It took the photographers five months to do this work. But the result was definitely worth it.

The full version of the McCarthy and Stein image is available at the following link. There you can properly examine the ring of fire formed during the eclipse and the structures on its surface.

Recall that a total solar eclipse will take place on April 8. It will be possible to observe it in North America.
