Famous billionaire and SpaceX founder Elon Musk continues to actively promote the idea of colonizing Mars, which he calls “life insurance” for humanity. But his ambition raises questions: does he forget about Earth, which faces much more urgent threats?

In a new interview with Fox News, Musk said that in the future, Mars would be the salvation when the Sun turned into a red giant billions of years from now and literally “scorched” our planet. However, scientists remind: the catastrophe from the expansion of the Sun will occur only in 5-6 billion years, while the climate crisis on Earth may become irreversible in a few decades.
“Instead of investing in fighting emissions, Musk seeks to weaken environmental regulations,” environmentalists said. For example, his company SpaceX has repeatedly violated environmental standards in Texas by polluting bodies of water with toxic wastewater. Starship rocket launches have also harmed local flora and fauna.
Policies towards progress
While Musk has helped popularize electric cars through Tesla, his political support is questionable. Thus, the billionaire publicly endorsed former US President Donald Trump, who called for increased fossil fuel production. According to analysts, this has led to a sharp rise in greenhouse gas emissions in the first 100 days of Trump’s presidency.
“It looks like a double game: on the one hand – green technologies, on the other – sabotage of environmental initiatives,” experts commented.
Who will save the Earth?
Last month, Musk announced that Starship “hoped” to reach Mars by the end of 2025 with Tesla’s Optimus robots. But the reality looks less optimistic: no Starship launch has ended in complete success yet, and the engineering challenges remain enormous.
In addition, the Trump administration has proposed increasing NASA’s budget by $1 billion for Mars missions, which opens SpaceX up to additional funding. Experts believe that this is the real goal of Elon Musk, which he is trying to achieve under the guise of “saving humanity”.
It remains unclear whether Musk’s Martian ambitions are a genius plan, or an escape from problems he helps create on his own.
In the meantime, colonizing Mars remains science fiction if Earth becomes an uninhabitable planet due to current inactivity and ignoring environmental issues.
