Space for Everyone: ESA launches free online course

A free online course about the space sector is now available to anyone interested. ESA’s education division created it for people without specialized training, allowing them to learn more about space exploration and discover where their existing knowledge and skills could be useful. Participants study at their own pace and receive a certificate at the end.

From Astronomy to Law

The Space for Everyone course, whose launch was announced by ESA Education on October 26, covers at least seven subject areas. These include astronomy, space engineering, space law and society, business, life sciences, and the application of space technologies to services on Earth. A separate module, The Story of Space, explains why humanity explores space and how space technologies affect everyday life.

There is no prescribed order for completing the course. Participants choose their own subject areas and modules, while interactive sections help them explore individual topics in greater depth. The astronomy section, for example, discusses black holes, while the engineering section demonstrates the modular structure of the Ariane 6 rocket.

More Than Engineering

The space sector relies on more than engineers alone. It needs lawyers, economists, biologists, and people who understand the relationship between technology and society. The course draws on the expertise of specialists from ESA and other relevant organizations, so an interest in biology or business could become a first step into an unfamiliar field.

Space law offers a particularly clear example. The Outer Space Treaty has been in force since 1967 and prohibits any state from claiming ownership of the Moon or another celestial body. As private companies prepare their own missions and government agencies plan to use lunar resources, questions about who can control those resources, and under what conditions, are moving from theory into practice.

Who Can Enroll?

No specialized training is required. The course is designed for people of different ages and backgrounds, from those choosing their future field of study to professionals with established careers. The agency describes it as open to everyone, so participants from Ukraine can also enroll through the ESA Learn platform.

ESA does not specify whether all modules must be completed to earn the certificate. The agency also does not state the course’s total duration in hours.
