“Jellyfish” in the Martian sky: a new image from Curiosity causes a stir on social media

Another photograph from Mars has sparked debate among the online community about the possibility of extraterrestrial life. The archival image, taken by a NASA rover back in 2023, only recently attracted the attention of social media users because of a strange detail in the corner of the frame.

The black-and-white raw image shows a barren and desolate Martian landscape. However, observant viewers noticed a silhouette in the upper left corner that reminded many of a “jellyfish” or an unidentified flying object (UFO). The image was taken by the right navigation camera of the Curiosity rover. Interestingly, at the same moment the spacecraft captured a series of images of the same area, but the unusual “jellyfish” appeared in only one of them.

Storm on Social Media

The image, published on Reddit, immediately triggered a wave of discussion. Some users reacted emotionally to the photograph, accusing space agencies of concealing information about extraterrestrial technologies that could potentially help humanity.

Others take a more pragmatic view. Skeptics point to the Fermi Paradox and note that such “anomalies” are most often the result of digital glitches, camera sensor artifacts, or solar flares that distort images. Similar discoveries that resemble familiar objects are also often simply a product of our imagination — a phenomenon known as pareidolia.

Contact or Optical Illusion?

Independent Mars researcher Jean Ward noted on the social network X that the object visually appears to be connected to the planet’s surface or resembles a tripod. At the same time, he emphasized that without direct investigation at the site, any conclusions remain only speculation.

The mysteries of such Martian anomalies will likely be resolved only after humans set foot on the Red Planet. In particular, SpaceX founder Elon Musk has repeatedly stated his intention to begin construction of the first city on Mars within the next 5–7 years.
