Magnificent photo

A private U.S. spacecraft headed for the Moon took stunning images of Earth during its week-long mission.

Still orbiting the Earth, Firefly Aerospace’s lunar landing module fired its engines on Thursday to put it on a trajectory to reach the moon in more than a month. A spacecraft called Blue Ghost has transmitted photos and video of our planet. The Texas-based company released the images on Friday.

It conducts experiments for NASA, part of the aerospace administration’s effort to return astronauts to the Moon this decade.

Two vehicles aimed to the Moon

Blue Ghost is one of two vehicles launched by SpaceX from Florida on January 15. It is scheduled to land on the Moon on March 2. The other vehicle is sponsored by the Japanese company iSpace and has an even longer route, with a landing in late May or early June.

This is the first lunar mission for Firefly and the second for iSpace, which made its first lunar landing in 2023. The latest Resilience landing module, based in Tokyo, is still orbiting Earth and performing all its maneuvers to get closer to the Moon.
