If you associate coziness next to a crackling fire with Christmas holidays, but you don’t have a fireplace at home, you can always create the atmosphere with YouTube videos that can be displayed on your Smart TV. But NASA has moved even further and offers viewers a virtual fireplace with the roar of rocket engines.
Aerospace Administration has created an eight-hour 4K video that transforms a fireplace classic into a cosmic holiday masterpiece. Instead of fire, the four RS-25 engines of the SLS rocket roar here, and in the video’s description NASA assures: “That cozy glow and relaxing roar is guaranteed to blow your guests away!” Although, of course, it is advisable that this impression remains only virtual.
NASA jokes: “Technically, this fireplace packs the heat of the SLS rocket’s four RS-25 engines and a pair of solid rocket boosters — just enough to get you to the moon! (And get through the holidays with your in-laws.)” For the full atmosphere, spectators can wrap themselves in blankets and take a cup of hot cocoa with marshmallows to make it look as believable as possible.
This rocket “winterization” is not just for fun. It additionally recalls the epic debut of the SLS rocket in the Artemis I mission in 2022, when the Orion spacecraft made a historic journey to the Moon and returned to Earth fully automated. The SLS provides a whopping thrust force of nearly 4,000 kg — enough to lift a heavy payload and open a new page in space exploration.
For space fans, NASA added details to the video: next to the “fireplace” — a photo of the Orion capsule in flight and the logo of the Artemis mission. This will give the interior an even more cosmic charm. So, if you’re looking for an unconventional way to add some holiday cheer, a rocket fireplace is just the thing!
