European Space Agency astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti has pleased her social media followers with a fresh space cosplay, perhaps the last in the Crew-4 mission. After playing the characters of Captain Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica pilot and Sandra Bullock in Gravity, Cristoforetti dressed up as a space stewardess.
On October 7, Cristoforetti posted on Twitter a photo of herself hovering in microgravity on the ISS, dressed as a Pan Am stewardess from Stanley Kubrick’s groundbreaking film 2001: A Space Odyssey of 1968. In the film, the flight stewardess was dressed in a white uniform with special Velcro boots that stick to the floor of the spacecraft and help to walk in a circle. To reproduce the scene, Cristoforetti used a projector with a screenshot of the interior of the spacecraft, and also wore a similar outfit.
“I had to know… can you really walk in space with Velcro shoes? Coming soon,” the astronaut wrote on Twitter.

Cristoforetti’s latest sci-fi tribute is a testament to her ability to engage the public in space exploration. It’s also a reminder of how impressive Stanley Kubrick’s visuals were in a film that debuted 54 years ago. The director achieved this effect by using a rotating room with a static camera. But such a result is still amazing even in our time of high-tech computer graphics.
Samantha Cristoforetti arrived at the ISS in April as part of the SpaceX Crew-4 mission. Her return to Earth is expected no later than this month.
