Strawberry Supermoon

On June 14, at 02:51 a.m. Kyiv time, the next full moon will come. This time it will take place when our moon will be in perigee — the closest point to the Earth in its orbit. Accordingly, the distance to it will be the smallest, and it will look very large in the sky. This phenomenon is called a supermoon.

At the same time, the full moon will occur just a week before the summer solstice. In the Northern Hemisphere, this will mean that the Sun will rise high above the horizon, and the Moon, on the contrary, will be low above it. And when the light from it passes through the Earth’s atmosphere, it can acquire the color of ripe strawberries.

In Ukraine, the strawberry supermoon will appear in the sky on June 14 at 09:45 UTC+3 about an hour after sunset. Its maximum height above the horizon will be a little more than 20 degrees. At this time, it will be possible to view more than 99 percent of the disk of our moon.

Why is the June full moon strawberry?

Strawberry is every full moon that occurs in the second half of June — early July. But the intensity of how deep shades of red and pink our moon acquires depends on how close this phase occurs to the summer solstice on June 22, geographical latitude and atmospheric conditions.

This phenomenon should be distinguished from the eclipse of the Moon, when the earth’s shadow falls on it and the color of our moon becomes more copper and purple and looks much more frightening. It can happen at any time of the year.

The color of the June full moon really makes you remember something pleasant and sweet. Strawberries were the first to be tied to it by the tribes of the Indians of North America, because this sweet berry ripens precisely during the period when the Moon in the sky resembles it in its color. And from them, everyone else began to call it strawberry.

Sweet Full Moon

In Europe, the June full moon is traditionally called pink. Researchers do not agree whether this is due to the roses beginning to bloom at this time, or simply with the color of our companion. It is quite possible that both versions are true.

In any case, all nations agree that a strawberry full moon is very romantic. It is not for nothing that both Buddhists and Hindus have three days of holidays, during which most weddings take place.

The same tradition existed in many regions of Europe. And the second name of the June full moon is the Honeymoon. Many at the same time associate the name, which now designates the period after the wedding with honey or mead. But whether in this way the inhabitants of the continent added sweets to themselves at the wedding under the strawberry month is unknown.
