Overturned lunar lander sends images of the Moon’s South Pole

Intuitive Machines has published new images transmitted to Earth by the Odysseus spacecraft. They show the southern polar region of the Moon.

The pictures were taken during landing, when Odysseus was at an altitude of about 30 meters. They demonstrate both the spacecraft and the cratered lunar surface.

Due to the fact that the Odysseus overturned during landing, only one of its solar panels is illuminated by the Sun, and therefore it receives less energy than it should have. And as the Sun sinks to the horizon, it becomes less and less. According to experts, Odysseus may stop working in the coming hours.

Despite these problems, the spacecraft still managed to transmit the data collected by its scientific instruments, as well as images. Intuitive Machines is expected to publish new images in the near future, including those taken at the time of the problematic landing of Odysseus. According to journalist Eric Berger, the company has  a picture taken at the moment of the first touch of the surface. It shows a vertically standing spacecraft with a broken leg and an engine still running.
