NASA demonstrates a quiet supersonic aircraft

NASA has demonstrated a new experimental X-59 aircraft. It is capable of breaking the sound barrier without a loud explosion-like sound. It has an unusual design and an elongated, narrow nose for this purpose.

Amazing supersonic aircraft

On Friday, January 12, NASA showed off its new X-59 aircraft to the public. In this way, it reminds us that it is engaged not only in space research but also in aeronautics. The presentation took place at the Lockheed Martin Skunk Works aviation facility in Palmdale, California. More than 150 people attended the presentation.

They were the first to see the X-59 experimental aircraft in a fully assembled form. Its main purpose is to explore ways to overcome the supersonic barrier in a “quiet mode”. Because usually an explosion-like effect occurs, which greatly complicates the possibility of using such aircraft, especially in densely populated areas.

This time, the X-59 did not take off into the sky. It just stood there, and it was enough for everyone to look at it and be amazed by this vehicle, painted in red and blue colors. The special impression on everyone was made by its extremely long and narrow nose. It is specially designed to extinguish the effects that occur during the transition to supersonic speed.

Also, an extremely unusual element turns out to be that its cabin has no glass at all in the front. Instead, there is an influx of fuselage. The pilot will rely entirely on a system of video cameras located outside the body.

When will the X-59 fly

The problem of “quiet” supersonic is not as insignificant as one might first think. The fact that a loud sound creates huge discomfort for people on the ground is only a small part of it. More importantly, all aircraft structures are under extreme stress.

This was the reason for the curtailment of passenger supersonic transportation programs at the time. These aircraft turned out to be too expensive. Their elements simply wore out too quickly when flying at ultra-high speeds.

NASA tried to solve this problem. In their work, they used advanced techniques such as augmented reality and 3D modeling. However, the design of the aircraft has been going on for many years, and all this time, the specialists have shown only pictures.

And finally, the plane was shown to the public. However, everyone understands that only test flights, which should begin soon, can show how well its concept justifies itself.
