Two asteroids twice the size of Kyiv TV tower each are approaching the Earth

On April 28, a massive asteroid will fly past the Earth, twice the size of the Kyiv TV tower. Asteroid 418135 (2008 AG33), about 760 meters in diameter, will fly past the Earth at a speed of 37,439 km / h this Thursday. But just a few days after this event, another asteroid, potentially even larger, will fly past our planet.

The second asteroid, 467460 (2006 JF42), will reach maximum approaching on May 9, 2022. Its approximate size is 860 meters. This means that a potentially space fragment could be 2.5 Kyiv TV towers wide. Moreover, the larger asteroid has a higher flight speed — 40,679 km / h. To illustrate this speed, let’s compare it with examples: it is 12.5 times faster than a bullet fired from a rifle, 17 times faster than a jet fighter, and 45 times faster than the Ukrainian anti-ship cruise missile “Neptune”, which sank the “Moscow” cruiser. The asteroid will miss the Earth at a distance of 5.6 million km.

Recurring visits in the future

Soon both of these two space stones will visit our space sector and miss the Earth again.

Asteroid 418135 (2008 AG33) was first discovered in 2008 — hence is the number in its name. It is estimated that he last approached Earth on March 1, 2015. He will once again fly past the Earth on May 25, 2029, and then return again on February 9, 2045.

467460 (2006 JF42) will fly past the Earth again a little earlier —  on May 11, 2023. It will visit our neighborhood again approximately once a year with rare four-year breaks. Moreover, its minimum approach to Earth will occur on May 4, 2159, when it will fly past our planet at a distance of 1.1 million kilometers.
