Daylight saving time has been canceled

During a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on June 16, daylight saving time was canceled. According to MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak, 261 MPs voted in favor of the bill. Now it must be signed by the President of Ukraine, and then it will come into force.

However, this does not mean that the clock will no longer have to be reset. On October 27 this year, according to the current law, it will have to be done again. Ukraine will switch to what is commonly known as winter time and stay there forever.

A few days ago, a parliamentary committee recommended that Ukraine abolish daylight saving time. Among the arguments in favor of abolition were the impact on human health and the promotion of countering Russian aggression, as well as supporting Ukraine’s European integration aspirations.

What is daylight saving time?

In general, there is only daylight saving time. It roughly corresponds to astronomical time on the meridian that passes through the middle of the respective time zone. There are 24 such zones in total, and in fact, their borders run along the borders of states or their administrative units.

On the other hand, Daylight Saving Time is a system invented more than a century ago to use daylight hours more efficiently and thus save energy. It means that clocks are set forward one hour in the spring and back in the fall.

In Europe, daylight saving time is currently in effect in all countries except Russia, Belarus, Turkey, Georgia, and Iceland. Now Ukraine has joined this list, so references to European integration hopes seem a bit strange.
