On September 28, a Russian drone struck the building of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. People were inside at the time. One person has been reported killed and three others injured. A fire is currently raging in the building.
NAS Under Drone Attack
Russia has once again struck Ukrainian science. As www.rbc.ua reports, on September 28, 2026, the building of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Kyiv’s Shevchenkivskyi district was hit by a drone. People were inside at the time.
According to media reports, one person was killed and three others were injured as a result of the enemy strike. The building is currently on fire. Fire crews and ambulances are working nearby. According to Oleksandr Sazanovych, head of the Shevchenkivskyi District State Administration, and Andrii Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation, efforts to deal with the consequences are ongoing.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has already responded to the situation. He noted that a rescue operation is currently underway, the fire is being extinguished, and rescuers are searching for people who may have been inside the building. All relevant services are involved. Today in Kyiv, a pharmaceutical company and gas stations were also attacked; in Dnipro, a business center was hit; and in other cities and regions, civilian facilities, businesses, and communications infrastructure were also targeted. Unfortunately, there are fatalities.
Scientific Losses in This War
Oleksii Biloshytskyi, Head of the Patrol Police Department, reported that traffic on Volodymyrska Street had been blocked from the intersection with Bohdana Khmelnytskoho Street to the intersection with Tarasa Shevchenka Boulevard.
This is not the first time Russia has struck Ukrainian science during this war. At the very beginning of the full-scale invasion, the Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology came under artillery fire. Later, the UTR-2 radio telescope was damaged after the occupying forces used the site as a training center.
Later still, Russia damaged the O. V. Palladin Institute of Biochemistry in Kyiv and the Odesa Observatory. And now the building from which all of Ukrainian science is administered has come under attack.
