Elon Musk promises first Starship mission to Mars in 2026

SpaceX plans to start flights to Mars on the Starship in two years. At first, the flights will be uncrewed to test the reliability of the landing. If they are successful, manned flights with a crew on board will begin in 4 years, as stated by Elon Musk. This is because the Earth and Mars are aligned for interplanetary missions every 26 months.

Musk said the frequency of missions would increase with each new mission, with the ultimate goal of building a self-sufficient city on Mars in 20 years. Musk believes that colonizing other planets will increase the longevity of consciousness, because humanity will no longer be dependent on a single planet.

Starship consists of two parts: the Super Heavy first stage and Starship upper stage. It is the most powerful rocket in the world with a height of 122 m and a thrust of 7,700 tons at launch, which is almost twice as much as NASA’s SLS for the Artemis program.

SLS is costly, while Starship is designed to be reusable. SpaceX plans to return the Super Heavy after each launch, making it possible to quickly inspect it and prepare it for the next mission. The company believes that the power and efficiency of Starship will make the colonization of Mars a reality.

Starship has undergone four test missions so far, including in April and November 2023, and in March and June this year. The vehicle has performed better with each flight, and the latest mission met all major objectives.

SpaceX is now preparing for a fifth mission, which could take place soon. Super Heavy and Starship have already been tested and will be used in flight. This time, SpaceX plans to try to land the Super Heavy back on the launch platform using special hands on the launch tower, which promises new dramatic moments.
