Rumors of trouble at the iconic studio BioWare had been circulating for some time, but the official news still shook the gaming industry. The creators of the epic Mass Effect and Dragon Age series are shutting down. Development of the next installment in the epic space saga Mass Effect has been canceled, although publisher Electronic Arts does not intend to abandon the franchise entirely.
Restructuring and Financial Failure

According to reports from Variety and statements by EA executives, BioWare’s closure was part of a 3% reduction in the company’s global workforce. The changes followed the publisher’s transition to private ownership under Saudi Arabia’s investment fund and private investors over the summer.
The final nail in the studio’s coffin was the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard in 2024, which failed to meet the publisher’s financial expectations. According to Bloomberg insider Jason Schreier, BioWare had approximately 50 employees remaining. Developing a new, large-scale sci-fi RPG would have required substantial investment and a major expansion of the team—a risk EA’s management was unwilling to take.
The Future of the Mass Effect Franchise
Despite closing the development studio, EA retains all intellectual property rights to Mass Effect. Moreover, according to IGN, Prime Video’s television adaptation is still moving forward.

The project, which entered active development in late 2024, is currently at the scriptwriting stage. Rumors suggest that the series will bridge the gap between the events of the original trilogy and the canceled game sequel.
EA Regroups as Studio Veterans Carry On
EA continues to shift its focus toward other major projects. Motive and Respawn Entertainment are continuing development of Marvel’s Iron Man and Star Wars Jedi 3. In addition, DICE and Respawn have joined forces to create a new game set in the Star Wars universe, which sources say will be Star Wars Battlefront 3.
Meanwhile, former BioWare developers have established their own independent teams:
- Archetype is working on the space action RPG Exodus, scheduled for release in 2027.
- The newly formed Arcanaut, led by Casey Hudson, director of the original Mass Effect and Knights of the Old Republic, has begun developing Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic.
