Darkness over Europe

The two images presented were obtained using the VIIRS radiometer installed on the NASA Suomi NPP satellite. This tool allows measuring the level of illumination, which makes it possible to capture the lights of night cities.

The first image shows Europe at night in February 2022. The second picture was taken in March, after the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. It is easy to see how this event literally changed the face of the European continent. Once brightly lit, Ukraine literally plunged into darkness. Some cities “went out” because of the destruction of infrastructure and the termination of power supply, while others because of the blackout regime.
