Alien: Romulus
What is the movie about?
The movie is set between the events of Alien and Aliens. A group of colonists exploring an abandoned space station comes face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.
Why it might be interesting
The xenomorph franchise has long been unable to boast of much integrity and quality. It’s no secret that Prometheus and especially Alien: Covenant in general have severely disappointed many fans who were expecting something completely different.
A still from the movie Alien: Romulus
Alien: Romulus is positioned as an attempt at a kind of work on mistakes. The authors of the film claim that they tried to collect the best elements from the first two films in the series, adding a generous portion of blood and violent scenes. According to the director Fede Alvarez, his work is largely inspired by the popular computer game Alien Isolation and this fact adds to the interest in Romulus. We’ll see how much the creators’ promises will be fulfilled on August 16.
Borderlands
What is the movie about?
Lilith, one of the most famous bounty hunters in the universe, returns to her home planet Pandora to find a missing girl. There she forms an alliance with a team of very picturesque and different characters. They have to fight alien monsters and dangerous bandits to find and protect the missing girl, who may hold the key to incredible power.
Why it might be interesting
Recently, the video game adaptation genre has been actively gaining momentum. The series The Last of Us and Fallout have received very high marks from both critics and ordinary viewers. Now the popular Borderlands game series is next in line.
The upcoming film can be credited with a usually very winning formula: a group of characters who are completely different from each other, who at first cannot stand each other, join forces and become a single team. The very popular Guardians of the Galaxy, for example, is based on the same scheme. Another strong point of Borderlands is its casting. The movie stars Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Haley Bennett and Jack Black. The world premiere of the film is scheduled for August 7. Then it will become clear whether its creators will be able to repeat the success of Fallout and Guardians of the Galaxy.
Slingshot
What is the movie about?
A group of astronauts embarks on a deadly mission to Saturn’s moon Titan and tries to maintain control over reality.
Why it might be interesting
Slingshot is a dark horse on our list. The film’s premiere is scheduled for August 30 — and we still don’t even have its trailer!
At the same time, Slingshot boasts an interesting plot, as well as Casey Affleck and Laurence Fishburne in the lead roles. Another potential advantage of the film is its director, Mikael Hofström, who has previously directed Escape Plan and 1408. The latter work clearly demonstrates that he is quite good at working with psychological stories, whose characters are in a limited location and try to distinguish reality from fantasy. So who knows? Perhaps Slingshot will be able to please fans of the genre.
Rebel Moon — The Director’s Cut
What is the movie about?
A battleship led by the ruthless Admiral Noble arrives in a peaceful colony on the desert moon of Veldt. He demands that the inhabitants give up all their grain, which puts them on the brink of starvation. To defend the settlement, farmer Gunnar joins forces with a mysterious woman named Cora and sets off on a journey across the universe to gather a team of defenders.
Why it might be interesting
Let’s be honest. The Rebel Moon dilogy did not arouse much enthusiasm from both critics and ordinary viewers (except for the very ardent fans of Zack Snyder’s work). The films were quite rightly criticized for poorly written characters and a plot that was a compilation of clichés from such cult films as Star Wars and Seven Samurai. In addition, many criticized Zack Snyder for overly long action scenes and excessive use of slow-motion.
And now Zack Snyder has decided to present the director’s cut of his dilogy. Its running time will be about six hours, with each part receiving about an hour of additional material. According to the director, this version conveys his idea much better. It is more coherent, contains many new scenes, has a different chronology of events in some episodes, and has received an “adult” age rating.
Of course, no one can guarantee that the new scenes and the “adult” rating will be able to correct the shortcomings of Snyder’s saga. But if you want to try to give it a second chance, the director’s cut certainly offers you the opportunity.
