Celestial intruder: Earth will collide with a small asteroid on September 4

On September 4, the Earth will collide with a small asteroid. This was reported by the European Space Agency (ESA).

The celestial body was identified on the morning of September 4 in images from the Catalina Sky Survey. According to astronomers’ estimates, its diameter is 1 – 1.5 meters. Calculations show that the asteroid will enter the Earth’s atmosphere over the Philippines near Luzon Island. According to ESA, this will happen today at 17:08 UTC.

Due to its small size, the asteroid poses no threat to our planet. It should disintegrate in the upper atmosphere. However, some small debris may reach the surface.

In any case, residents of the Philippines have the opportunity to expect a very spectacular celestial spectacle in the form of a bright bolide – like the one that residents of Spain and Portugal observed in May this year, or Kyiv residents last year.

It is also worth noting that to date, this is only the ninth case in the history of advance detection of a celestial body before its fall to Earth.
