Astronauts on Twitch for the first time: NASA invites to a unique event from the ISS

The job of space agencies, particularly NASA, is not only to do scientific research, but also to communicate with the public and encourage people to learn about space. NASA regularly organizes events such as astronauts meeting with school children, collaborates with public science projects, and encourages amateur astronomers to participate in astronomy events. Now the agency is trying to engage young people through the popular gaming platform Twitch.

NASA will present its first event on Twitch next week from the ISS. The goal is to attract a new audience that is interested in space science. During the broadcast, astronauts who are currently on the space station will talk about their life on board and the work they do, and viewers will be able to ask them questions. The event is scheduled for February 12, at 11:45 a.m. EST and will be broadcast on NASA’s Twitch channel.

Agency officials hope the event will help attract the younger generation to space activities.

“In addition to our spacewalks, launches and landings, we plan to do more broadcasts like this. Twitch is just one of the many platforms through which we are trying to bring new audiences to the topic of space. This is the first event on Twitch, but it won’t be the last,” said Brittany Brown, director of the Digital Technology and Communications Division at NASA Headquarters.

The event will be attended by astronaut Don Pettit, who is currently on the ISS, as well as astronaut Matt Dominick, who completed his rotation on the station last year. In addition, a 24-hour online broadcast from the ISS is available on YouTube in enhanced 4K quality, which includes views from inside the station, particularly of the crew’s work, as well as incredible landscapes of Earth from space.

NASA previously released a guide for astronauts on how to discuss Ukraine on the ISS.
